Quake II has survived over the years due to a fantastic community and it’s extreme flexibility. When compared to the other Quakes, Quake II provides a unique competitive experience in weapon balance, movement, and match features. Kept up-to-date with newer engines and competitive mods, Quake II is just as relevant today as it was on release. Download the Quake II Kicker today to jump right back into this fantastic scene with a minimum of setup and a full-featured client right away!
Note: This compilation is, to the best of our knowledge, completely legal. The only base assets remaining in the Kicker are those distributed with the Q2 demos, which are still freely available. The Kicker is also largely supported by user models and textures, released by the community. If it turns out there is some line-crossing involved, let us know immediately so we may either modify or remove the offending files.

1) Download the Quake II Kicker zip file linked above, and unzip onto your hard drive. This will create /q2kicker which contains all of your Quake II files.
2) Modify baseq2/autoexec.cfg to input your binds and settings. All of the binds and settings are already in there, but are missing the actual key binds. Simply add them to the appropriate lines, and you’re set to go.
3) Copy over any optional paks you may want, such as player brightskins or alternate huds, from the /optionals directory to /baseq2.
4) Use either the in-game server browser, which has a few servers plugged in, or use the included server browser (thanks r1ch) to view the rest of the q2 servers available. Hop in, and get fragging!
Note: Be sure to read the included documentation for advanced setup and configuration. You can also find us in IRC if you have any questions or problems.

A relatively quiet night, but fraught with many laughs and surprises. This is the community I love – get on a stream, shoot some bull, and enjoy some frags. Was a great night to hang out and enjoy each others company, even if some of it wasn’t completely sober.

Q2DM1 has a long history, and has managed to become the mainstay of the Quake II competitive scene. Many find it over-played and boring, but there’s no escaping it’s influence on the game and the community. The Edge League centers around this honored map, and pays it’s dues by having the best of the best duke it out on the most cherished of maps. Damiah and Purri bring us a great show, and congrats to… well, you’ll see.

This guy… is something else.
Making great HD videos of high-tension Quake II matches?
Check.
Having one of the coolest and most sought-after paks in the scene?
Check.
Showcasing the sexy shoutcasting of Tastyspleen.tv?
Double check.
Telling us about it?
NO!
I didn’t even know these videos existed until a month or so after they were put online. Â Anywho, they’re awesome. Above is one of them, and the rest can be found in hd with a high framerate here.
We’d like to see more from him, but it does take him some time. However, he did say he’s planning on keeping up with the larger q2 events, so three cheers for Clau!

Episode 5 of the up-and-coming casual gaming, quaking, and indie developing podcast: Altered Airwaves. Hosted by Altered Softworks, Paril and crew is here to keep us updated on what they’ve been working on, even if it’s been wasting time on Borderlands.

Wow. Just wow. Couldn’t ask for a better matchup for the finals, or for a more epic turnout. Thanks to all of the ZDDL staff for making this happen, and thank you to all of the live viewers making this a must-see event!

Featured today is Clau, who has been putting together really, really nice HD VODs for us on the sly. We didn’t even know he was doing this! Anywho, this is to honor him and showcase his work.
